Kali is a highly sophisticated and comprehensive martial system with a very rich history, culture and reputation of effectiveness. Manong John LaCoste (born 1884 / died 1973) was one of Guro Dan Inosanto's most influential Filipino Martial Arts instructors. Born somewhere in the Visayas (most likely Cebu) in the Philippines, Manong LaCoste moved first to Hawaii then to Stockton, California some time in the 1920's/30's. Manong LaCoste began teaching a young Guro Dan as a favor to his father.

Guro Dan Inosanto still teaches and trains in the arts he has learned from Masters and veterans of the Filipino Martial Arts such as Grandmaster Leo Giron, Master John LaCoste, Master Illustrismo, Master Cabales and Master Floor Villabrille.
